Put Your Tastes First

With so many beautiful rooms swirling around your head (and feed), where do you start?

Charlie Hopper, a creator who focuses on designing cozy, modern spaces, notes that the most important tip and best first step is "finding your style and what you love."

While it's great to pull inspiration from the people around you—digitally or otherwise—you'll be the one living in the space. A piece of decor or color might look cool, but does that trend resonate with you?

Hopper offers an example: "I knew I loved the look of classic paneling so we decided to do that throughout our home," she says. "It’s a feature that I love and draws the eyes to it, and it gets a lot of compliments."

Although she notes it's a classic addition and others love it too, considering her style first ensured it's a part of her home that she'll always love.

Choose Neutral Colors as Your Base

Your color scheme is another important component to consider when you want your home to look as good as the ones you spot on TikTok.

Creator Sage Phillips dreams up modern rooms with an earthy and organic undercurrent, and she points out that neutral hues and shades are always a good foundation.

"Neutral colors, like whites, beiges, soft grays, and browns provide a versatile base that makes a room feel light and airy," says Phillips. "They also allow you to easily switch out accessories and decor for a fresh look without overhauling the entire space."

If you want a balanced environment that's more minimal, she says to incorporate natural textures too like wood, stone, and metal.

Design Tip

Don't shy away from bold hues if you're more inclined to vibrant colors. Many of the spaces on TikTok feature neons and pastels—the point is to start with a base that's neutral enough to build from.

Upcycle Both New and Old

Emily Auffrey

You don't have to buy all new things to make your living spaces feel fresh. Emily Auffrey, a DIY, plants, and decor content creator says to think outside of the box and try your hand at upcycling.

"So many neighbors throw out items they no longer want and are in great condition or they throw out items that can be DIYed," she points out, which presents you with many decor opportunities.

She recommends searching your apartment complex or neighborhood area at the end and beginning of the month, as people often move then.

DIY Tip

If you come across items that need a little cleaning and love before you upcycle them, Auffrey says her cleaning staples are The Pink Stuff for more difficult stains, as well as vinegar and bleach.

Layer Your Textures

Another tip that'll align your design with the homes you see on TikTok is nailing your layers of texture, which is easily done by mixing textiles.

Phillips notes that, along with a neutral color palette, it "creates a serene and cohesive look that is both inviting and visually interesting."

She says to start with a rug, which will make your home feel cozier and help define the space. Her preference is something made of natural fibers and low-key patterns to keep the look organic.

Once this is in place, she'll add soft, plush extras, like throw blankets and pillows. She says you can choose anything from chunky knits to breezy linens depending on what you gravitate towards.

"This collection of textures can enhance the sense of comfort and warmth, and pulls a room together," she says.

Go Big

If you've been using small decor items to change up your home to no avail, it might be time to rethink your methodology. Hopper says that using larger pieces is often a better way to go.

"Using larger items fills the space in a positive way and makes it look cohesive, whereas if you chose smaller pieces, they can sometimes look lost in the space and make the room look smaller," she explains.

That being said, she notes accessories are still essential for adding depth and personality to a home. One option on the smaller side are coffee table books, as they "make the space look so timeless" and come in a multitude of colors.

Add Picture Lights

You already likely know the importance of good lighting. But other areas of your home might be perfect candidates for a little extra glow that you haven't thought of.

Hopper uses battery-operated lights to frame the artwork around her home.

"It brings so much warmth and coziness and focus to the decor," she says, adding that it helps give your space "a luxe hotel feel and that was exactly what we were going for."
